EXCLUSIVE: Nodfactor Interview With Apollo Brown

May 29, 2010

Pretty much what the title says. While Apollo Brown was in town for his Fat Beats in-store we caught up with him for a really dope interview. In this first part the mad man from Michigan plugs his latest project The Reset and gets into how he started making beats on Windows Voyetra software and how he makes his remixes using nothing but Cool Edit 2000.

“I use Cool Edit 2000 with no multitrack…I have like 30 windows open..” - Apollo Brown

Splinter In My Mind: Reakwon’s “Lizz” Sample

May 28, 2010

So I was at the listening for Raekwon’s mixtape Cocainism 2 with some of my brothers in arms, Chuck Creekmur (@chuckcreekmur,) Mr. Mecca(@MrMecc,) Datwon Thomas (@daydog) and The Blackspot (@TheBlackspot). The mixtape is full of dope cuts, Rae even took the beat from the Wu-Tang Shoalin style video game and rhymed over it (“Just For Laughs”). But we experienced a collective “What the fuck is that sample?” moment when he dropped the DJ Scratch produced “Lizz.”

It was one of those splinter in your mind, tip-of-your-tongue-you-know-you’ve-heard-it-before-but -can’t -quite -place it right away moments. After some fumblings we all agreed that Lizz shared some musical DNA with Slick Rick’s “Behind Bars.”

From that point it was only a point of checking out the resource of all resources, the-breaks.com, to figure out what wonderful melody (that I’m assuming was produced by Warren G) was responsible for all of us making “the face.” And there it was, Les McCann’s “Somtimes I Cry.”

Diggers know Les McCann’s music is responsible for some of the hottest beats out so this didn’t come as a surprise. What threw me off personally was the woman singing on Raekwon’s version, had me thinking it was a Minnie Ripperton joint but that was not the case.

Anyway, head on over to XXLmag.com or Nahright and download a copy of Cocainism. It’s worth the bandwidth.

Also peep Rae reuniting with his brethren Matty C and Scott Free from Loud Records:

The Tweets Is Watching: Ryan Leslie x Asher Roth?

May 27, 2010

Whoa! Hit producer/writer/artist/marketing genius Ryan Leslie just posted that he’s been locked up in the studio with Asher Roth for the past few days. I can’t even imagine what the outcome of the collaborative efforts would sound like but I hope we all find out in the very near future. Within the past couple weeks we’ve learned that Roth has been working with Nottz and now R Les. Is this all for his sophomore album? I don’t know, but it definitely will be a project to look forward to if these producers are on there.

VIDEO: Reason 5 Live Sampling

May 27, 2010

Remember the time when samples were something you sampled and not loaded from your hard drive? When a sampler was a machine that could record samples, not just play them back.

As samplers became software instead of machines, they came to rely on external sample editing software for recording and editing the samples and the art of spur-of-the-moment creative sampling was pretty much lost. Now we are bringing it back to Reason 5 with its live sampling input.
