Outkast’s Mr DJ Flips Michael Jackson For “Rhythm Roulette”

Is this cheating? In one of the most unorthodox episodes of Mass Appeal’s “Rhythm Roulette” the Dungeon Family’s Mr DJ takes Michael Jackson’s “Off The Wall,” J Dilla’s “Donuts” and A Stones Throw compilation to make a beat from scratch.

He was having a particularly good time with the drum fill at the beginning of “Rock with You,” but ended up using portions of “Don’t Stop Til you Get Enough.”

“The way they mic’d the drums back then is different than they do now,” says the man behind Outkast’s “Elevators,” “Da Art of Storytellin'” and more. “So you’re sampling sounds from people who are [actually] playing a drum set, you get that authentic sound.”

Watch to see what he came up with.
