The 47th Beat Society was a NY and Philly doubleheader for the beat loving faithful this year. The popular showcase drew back-to-back packed houses at Milkboy in Philly and Littlefield Brooklyn, NY.
Philly lead things off on May 7th with Jahlil Beats, Apollo Brown, Chad Wes and Antman Wonder followed by !llmind, Lee Stone, DJ Skizz and Apollo Brown shutting it down in New York. Pharoahe Monch performed on both nights sharing new heat from his latest release P.T.S.D. and was joined in Brooklyn by Jean Grae. Greasy was on the bill to showcase her beats but ran into some technical difficulties, so Queens’ Skizz was called in to pinch hit. Craig G, Rockness Monstah Hezekiah, III and Chill Moody also blessed the mic.
Beat Society hosts Stef Tataz and Sao were joined by guest hosts Torae and Peter Rosenberg on the stage to keep the momentum going between rounds. But it was the producers who were charged with moving the crowd.
After a few rounds of beat exhibitions each producer played their flip of a sample and in the remix round they were all asked to remake Pharoahe Monch’s “Simon Says.”
