Wow. A few days ago I was treated to the free sample (you see how drug dealers do?) of this project, a blend of Outkast’s “Skew It On The Bar-B” with A Tribe Called Quest’s “Scenario” remix instrumental. On paper you’re thinking “That’s too much, it’s overload…it’s…nuts.” But when you hear it you almost wonder how it never happened before now (maybe it did, but it’s new to us).
Months ago we had our minds collectively blown by The Gummy Soul crew reworking Tribe beats from scratch to mix with The Pharcyde in “Bizarre Tribe: A Quest To The Pharcyde” (Watch our interview with them here) and now Nappy DJ Needles has come back to obliterate what was left of our gray matter to merge two of hip-hop’s greatest groups into a first-class blend, “A Tribe Called Kast.”
Seemless blends like “We’ve Got The Jazzy Bell,” “Bonita Play On Elevators” and “Findawainduetime” make for a sonic ambrosia that feels like 3 Stacks and Big Boi went to stay with their cousins in Queens for the summer only to find out that they had way more in common than they ever imagined. This mix makes all of those years of discord between artists from the North East and the South (real or imagined) feel as stupid as it was. Hip-Hop is truly one nation under a groove and sometimes it just takes a flip of the beat to find common ground (remember what Masta Ace did with Jeep Ass N*gga and Born To Roll?) Our stories are the same, we just tell them a little differently.
