I’ve had the privilege of interviewing some pioneering musicians like Jazz great Ramsey Lewis and Leon Huff, and one constant in those conversations is how much the lack of music in the school system has impacted the industry.
Well, some folks are helping to stem that tide so that our future musicians can get in that coveted 10,000 hours of practice needed to become great (if you don’t know what I’m talking about go and pick up a copy of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers right now.)
Last night in NYC Swizz Beatz got his wife Alicia Keys and some folks with deep pockets to gather at Marquee to auction of artwork created by students at a Bronx charter school, as well as a Fender guitar autographed by every member of The Rolling Stones. All of the proceeds went to help students at The Bronx charter school for the Arts reach their creative potential.
I was lucky enough to be in the building to catch some of the highlights.
