These Red Bull Music Academy lectures need to be downloadable on iTunes. I need to be able to take them with me. In the latest from L.A. Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest gives us some great jewels, including the production of the first beat on Tribe’s first album, People’s Instinctive Travels & The Paths of Rhythm, “Push It Along.”

“I’m listening to that and I’m hearing Afrika’s voice in the background from The Jungle Brothers.  I’m thinking of Mr. Lawnge sliding me that drum break…thinking of a whole bunch of different things. Even the opening was somewhat controversial in the studio to jump it off, because it was so nerdy, but it was supposed to signify the beginning of A Tribe Called Quest and being like the babies, the offspring of The Jungle Brothers. So that particular song is very monumental to me…we were 18 when we did that.”
