First official single from The Wonder Years, “Band Practice, PT 2” featuring Phonte and Median. I don’t know what it is about this bassline that has me making the scrunchface right now but dammit do not play this shit on your bullshit computer speakers or I will Ha-Do-ken yo ass down to Best Buy to get some real speakers. Recently, I spoke with 9th about his Chris Brown record for my pop culture playground TheUrbandaily and we segued into The Wonder Years because a year ago or so he told me that bold face lie that the Wonder Years might never come out. Here is what he told me about his change of heart:
“What a difference a while makes. When I told you The Wonder Years might not come out it was because I wanted to get something started for my artists, well,…Jamla is doing well. We’re a budding independent brand giving people a mainstream alternative. I’m happy about that. Now my whole label is [telling me] it’s your turn now. Other than the David Banner record I haven’t done anything outside of my label. I’m not into sitting in A&Rs offices and chasing down rappers. I’m not good at that. Jay-Z kind of messed it up for me. Jay came to me and did a record, then Beyonce, Mary J. Blige and Destiny’s Child. I’m not chasing ya’ll. If you want to get together and do music that’s fine. But I’m not gonna court you to make some music.
Who is on Wonder Years?
Mr. Cheeks, Phonte, Warren G. Kendrick Lamar, Lil B, Tanya Morgan, Currensy, Skyzoo, Terrance Martin, Marshia Ambrosius, David Banner, Raekwon The Chef, Mack Miller, Erika Badu, Murs…these are all people that rock with me though. They respect me and I respect them. I don’t have to jump through a bunch of hoops.
The Wonder Years will be out on September 27, 2011 on the same day as Phonte, J. Cole, Big Krit, Evidence, J-Live, Yelawolf and Van Hunt, so he’s in good company.
NOTE: 9th is on Ustream now…(9/1/11 12:48 am)
