I was out taking a walk in the digital rain (this NY weather sucks!) when I came across this post at TheBVX about Shaolin Jazz. While the Wu is well-known known for pillaging old soul it’s not as if RZA hasn’t dabbled with the African-American classical art form before. A nice slice of Duke Ellington’s pianos on “Black And Tan Fantasy” was maneuvered into the beat of “Shame On A Nigga.” However, the idea still intrigued me and I read on.
Turns out blogger Gerald Wastson was inspired to create a mixtape of Wutang/Be-Bop mash-ups after seeing a reworking of Wutang album covers.
“I developed the idea of SHAOLIN JAZZ while interviewing a graphic designer by the name of Logan Mills, who had designed his own personal series of jazz-inspired Wu-Tang album covers called Wu-Note,” explains Gerald Watson, the blogger and marketing guru who produced last year’s the Classics series celebrating album art. Mills said he’d be happy to design an album cover for a Wu Tang jazz-rap album, if one existed, so Watson sought out DJ 2-Tone Jones, a friend who had provided background tunes at the Classics exhibitions. Jones agreed to rework a host of Wu Tang songs with jazz samples. (read more here)
Evidently this has been in the works for some time now and the mixtape drops on April 11th. They’ve provided a sample for us, a mashup Pharoah Sanders’ ‘Astral Traveling’ and Wu’s ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ called “Astral C.R.E.A.M.” I know, I know, it sounds like a hemorrhoid treatment but the song is pretty good.
