DJ Scratch Cuts Up On The iPad [VIDEO]

January 10, 2011

A few weeks ago we asked if this DJ app for the iPad created by Algoriddim would pose any threat to Serato. Now it seems even they have some competition.

Allhiphop.com caught up with DJ Scratch, who seems to have taken a liking to the app “Baby Decks” by Async while he is traveling.

This is a more basic demo of the Baby Decks App.

The iPad is slowly becoming a favorite music creation software. Stay tuned for our interview with DJ Double-O if Kidz In The Hall who has worked the iPad into his studio set-up.

Drinks With DJ Scratch [VIDEO]

December 27, 2010

A few weeks before the end of the Master Of The Mix competition I had a chance to get slightly inebriated (not really) with the legendary DJ Scratch. In this first part we talk about the challenges on Smirnoff’s “Master Of The Mix” reality show and why he chose to do it in the first place. Later on I get him to retell the story of how he met Jam Master Jay as well as how he reunited with EPMD.

Master Of The Mix Talib Remix Battle [VIDEO]

December 23, 2010

Smirnoff’s Master of The Mix wrapped with DJ Scratch declared the winner. However, this was one of the coolest parts of the series, when the three DJ/producers had to remix a Talib Kweli acapella.

Viewers were given a sneak peak inside of their respective recording spaces, including Scratch’s lab Area-51.

Grandmaster Flash Speaks On His Innovations In DJing [VIDEO]

November 3, 2010

“I’m a scientist,” Grandmaster Flash told a rapt audience at a screening for BET’s “Master Of The Mix” reality series.

The televised contest between DJ Scratch, Vikter Duplaix, DJ Revolution, DJ Mars, Jazzy Joyce, DJ Rap and Rich Medina was previewed for a group of guests which included host Just Blaze and Master Judge Kid Capri. But even with all of the hip-hop heavyweights in the room there is one man they all paid homage to.

In the video below hip-hop’s first producer explains the technical innovations he implemented with turntables that we now take for granted.

“What I noticed was that [DJs] would pick up the tone arm to attempt to arrive at the top of the break…if you put a record up in the light you’d see that it has many, many grooves. The chance of you dropping that needle on that particular area, every single time, with duplicate records, is almost impossible. So I said to myself ‘there has to be a way…’

Just Blaze Hosting “Master Of The Mix” On Centric

October 5, 2010

So this is the show Just Blaze was being mum about with us a few days ago:

SMIRNOFF Vodka is launching a new reality television show, Master of the Mix. In a quest to crown the hottest DJ in the world, Master of the Mix is hosting multiple DJs in cities throughout the world to determine the ultimate mix master. Hosted by Grammy nominated producer/DJ, Just Blaze, and world famous DJ, Kid Capri, the show will pit the world’s most prominent DJs against each other in head-to-head competition. The show will air Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. ET beginning 11/3 on Centric, a 24-hour music and entertainment channel aimed at the African American audience. The show re-airs on Saturday nights at midnight ET on BET.

What’s trippy about this show is they have legends like DJ Scratch, DJ Revolution and Jazzy Joyce competing against each other. Will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Splinter In My Mind: Reakwon’s “Lizz” Sample

May 28, 2010

So I was at the listening for Raekwon’s mixtape Cocainism 2 with some of my brothers in arms, Chuck Creekmur (@chuckcreekmur,) Mr. Mecca(@MrMecc,) Datwon Thomas (@daydog) and The Blackspot (@TheBlackspot). The mixtape is full of dope cuts, Rae even took the beat from the Wu-Tang Shoalin style video game and rhymed over it (“Just For Laughs”). But we experienced a collective “What the fuck is that sample?” moment when he dropped the DJ Scratch produced “Lizz.”

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It was one of those splinter in your mind, tip-of-your-tongue-you-know-you’ve-heard-it-before-but -can’t -quite -place it right away moments. After some fumblings we all agreed that Lizz shared some musical DNA with Slick Rick’s “Behind Bars.”

From that point it was only a point of checking out the resource of all resources, the-breaks.com, to figure out what wonderful melody (that I’m assuming was produced by Warren G) was responsible for all of us making “the face.” And there it was, Les McCann’s “Somtimes I Cry.”

Diggers know Les McCann’s music is responsible for some of the hottest beats out so this didn’t come as a surprise. What threw me off personally was the woman singing on Raekwon’s version, had me thinking it was a Minnie Ripperton joint but that was not the case.

Anyway, head on over to XXLmag.com or Nahright and download a copy of Cocainism. It’s worth the bandwidth.

Also peep Rae reuniting with his brethren Matty C and Scott Free from Loud Records:
