Among other things Premier talks about making the early Gangstarr recordings like “Words I Manifest” “Jazz Music” and how he got out of his first recording contract with Wild Pitch records that “signed his life away.”
Pete talks about making his classic remixes like House Of Pain’s “Jump Around” and they both talk about working on Nas’ Illmatic.

DJ Premier made his way to Chicago a few weeks ago for the Red Bull Big Tune finals and ImFlashy.com had the opportunity to sit down with him to talk about what he’s been up to lately. In part one of our exclusive interview with the legendary producer, we discuss his role with the BET cyphers and how BET is sitting on exclusive footage of Busta Rhymes’ cypher but didn’t put it out because he didn’t want to. Premier also discusses his upcoming project, his new artists and to wrap up, he mentions possibly doing some work on Drake’s upcoming sophomore album and that Drake is currently working with 9th Wonder.
Marco Polo “What I’ve Learned Most From Primo Is To Be A Stubborn Son Of A Bitch”

Marco Polo Interview from Pound Magazine on Vimeo.
Now that the title has got your attention I think the point Marco makes is a great one. When it comes to this industry people at times are often conflicted as to whether or not they should stay true to themselves or if they should make some music that’s hot and chase the paper. Ideally you want to be able to reach that level where your creating music that sells without selling out or copying. Be an innovator, not an imitator.
DJ Premier Discusses Unreleased Jay-Z Diss Record
December 9, 2010
DJ Premier recently spoke with The Well Versed for their “Dropping Gems Series” and during their sit down he did just dat. Regarding records that never saw the light of day this is what Premier had to say.
DJ Premier: There was a record I did with Sinead O’ Connor –a remix to “Famine,” about the potato famine. But right before it came out she went through her breakdown and controversy and she shut down completely. We were label mates at the time so that’s the reason why I got the gig. She was also a Gang Starr fan, and a fan of my production. It never came out and I really, really wanted it to. It was a really good record. There was also a record with MOP. We did one for their last album. We should have talked about maybe revamping it and doing it, but that record was so raw. It never came out and I don’t know if it ever will, but hopefully one day it will see the light of day.
There’s a Jay-Z one where he was getting a little slick at a lot of people. I won’t even say their names. He said a lot of slick shit about a lot of people from the era he was coming through when he was just coming out with Reasonable Doubt. He was airing them out and doing it properly. If he had done it, he would have been respected for it. He did it so dope, and so cleverly, and he was so witty with it. But he erased it, so it’s going to be a memory I take to the grave. But it’s all gravy because Jay and I are good friends so I would never violate him like that.

Most you know that when I conduct my interviews of producers I wear two hats: one as this site’s founder where I get into more technical aspects of production and the other for TheUrbanDaily.com where I take a more main stream approach. Sometimes they cross over.
In this clip of my interview with DJ Premier he talks about DJing BET’s The Cipher and shares how the Skull Snaps break-beat was chosen. Later in the video he also talks about going up against Dr. Dre in Vibe’s producer tournament.
I’ll have a more detailed interview in our Lab section shortly where he discusses mixing techniques and the rumors of the demise of Panasonic’s Technique 1200 turntables, along with some exclusive studio footage from our people’s at SlangRapDemocracy.
DJ Premier Talks Nas Album & Jay-Z Collaboration & Blueprint 3 Snub
November 12, 2010
I don’t know about you guys but I’m tired of hearing about Nas and Premier doing an album. Until something materializes with that and Detox I’d rather hear nothing. To be quite honest I don’t think I’d want to even hear a Nas/Premier project anyway, I’m not a traditionalist in that sense and I think it would prob sound quite dated. I’d rather hear Nas put out a project that actually had some good production. Oh well, guess we all have our dreams, right?

Despite some major leaks and several varied track lists hitting the ‘net, Kanye West is sticking by the Nov. 22 release date for his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
With contributing producers Pete Rock and RZA adding their signature New York sound to the record, fans were also teased with talks of DJ Premier making the final cut. But Preemo says fans may have to wait a bit longer for the much-anticipated collaboration.
“I asked him about it at the BET Hip-Hop awards, and he said didn’t get a chance to do it,” DJ Premier told VIBE yesterday from Headquartez studio in midtown Manhattan. “But he said ‘I’m doing the album with Jay-Z, and I need two tracks for that.’ And he even kept hitting me to get more tracks for the album he’s about to drop. But right now, my priority is getting my artists up and running.”
