On January 21 the first Beat Society of 2017 was held in Philadelphia, PA at Johnny Brenda’s. The long running producer showcase has featured everyone from Just Blaze, Kanye West, illMind and Pete Rock, but on this night they boasted a full hometown talent lineup as Hank McCoy, DJ Poppz, Bear One and Antman Wonder put their latest sonic creations on display. Founders and hosts Stef Tataz and Sao helped keep the proceedings on schedule as the producers were joined by MCs Chill Moody, Reef The Lost Cause and Hezekiah between the rounds.
Afterward Nodfactor caught up with Antman Wonder, who played selections from his upcoming instrumental project Sounds of Saturday Morning, to get an update on “PRhyme 2” with DJ Premier and Royce Da 5′ 9″ and to find out what else he has cooking for 2017.
“It’s always nice to let people hear what you’re doing in a nice comfortable space with some nice big speakers. It worked out,” he says of the tracks he previewed, including the head nodding “Gem Season” and others. “They responded to the weirdest stuff really well. I feel like I’m on the right path. A little test marketing.”
Antman lead off his previous project Memories of The Fewture with the cut “Forever Saturday,” so the title of the new project shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
“It’s a multiple entendre,” he explains. “I was born on a Saturday morning. I treat Saturday mornings as a holiday because that was the time when you had your release from the week, and they used to have cartoons. And I used to be a cartoonist growing up before I chose to do music. So now when I do music I want it to feel animated. It’s visual sound.”
The composer’s lush soundscapes have found their way inside of tracks by other producers like !llmind, Statik Selektah and The Justice League so we’re sure there will be more goodies found in the new project.
“I like to hear how YOU hear it,” Antman says of being sampled. “I wanna hear it from your standpoint and perspective. I learned how to create that way sampling myself. I think we need to replenish. We’ve taken a lot from music and I just want to be one of the people to give back.”
In 2016 Antman forged a new relationship with Royce 5′ 9″ and DJ Premier, producing “Savages” from Trust The Shooter and providing the musical pieces for Preemo’s chops on “Black History,” a preview of the highly anticipated PRhyme 2.
“We’re at the finish line, I don’t wanna get anybody’s hopes up,” he says before adding, “I’m still a fan. I’m staff on this album. I have no say on this album whatsoever and I love it. Because when I actually hear it, I’ll be hearing it with everybody else.”
In addition to PRhyme 2 Ant also teased a project with a Nodfactor favorite, DJ Khalil. Watch both videos below for more.
