On Tuesday August 19th DJ Statik Selektah releases his sixth studio album, “What Goes Around,” on Duck Down Music. It features an impressive guest list including Lil’ Fame, Joey Bada$$, Styles P, Talib Kweli, Ab-Soul and more. Nodfactor.com took a trip his Brooklyn studio to talk about his latest work and to have him show us how he made the beat for the first single, “Carry On.”

“Karma, especially in this music business,” he answers when asked why he picked this title for the album. “The turntable that my life revolves around and it’s a roulette wheel, I’m a degenerate gambler. It all goes together. ‘What Goes Around…’ If you look at the vibe of the music on the album it’s very reminiscent of what people thought was out of style for a while, which is ridiculous to me.”

“My lane is heavily influenced by the Q-Tip’s the DJ Premiers and the Pete Rocks. I wanted to dedicate this to my man Guru, who did the ‘Jazzmatazz’ thing. I wanted to take what A Tribe Called Quest would sound like mashed up with NWA. It’s different, ya know.”

Watch as he shows us how he chopped the sample for “Carry On” and programmed it in Pro Tools.
