Breakfast Breaks #3: Donny Hathaway, “I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry”

On the 106th Anniversary of my esteemed brotherhood Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, I wanted to dedicated today’s “Breakfast Breaks” to one of our esteemed brothers, the late Donny Hathaway.

This song, “I Love The Lord, He Heard My Cry” is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. It was the first song on Hathaway’s last studio album, Extension of A Man, released in 1973. The lush instrumental is filled with violins, horns and angelic organs. And then there is a breakdown at the 3:50 mark would have St. Peter uprocking at the Pearly Gates.

Ironically, it’s almost too beautiful. Some producers I’ve talked about it flat out said they didn’t want to touch it, despite it being so ripe for sampling. What say you?
