Pete Rock Addresses Syl Johnson Lawsuit Over “The Joy”

Veteran soul singer Syl Johnson recently called out Jay-Z and Kanye West for an uncleared portion of his song “Different Strokes” which was used on Watch The Throne bonus cut, “The Joy.” The track is produced by Pete Rock and the veteran producer explained on his twitter account that he didn’t sample Johnson and would have cleared it if he had. “Just to clear the air about WTT, I never sampled that Syl Johnson record. If you sample Syl you gotta show him sum[sic[ respect and clear the sample.”

So we guess Kanye sprinkled the extra bits on there after the fact.  In an interview with TheUrbandaily.com, Syl Johnson’s daughter Syleena discusses her father’s legacy, his being sampled and their work together.

Here is the original “Different Strokes” by Syl Johnson. How many samples can you place in it?

I knew Pete Rock ain’t fuck wit that record like that. They did each other the favor and threw Pete’s name on there for a little hip-hop cred.
